The Queensland Government is developing a Queensland Ports Strategy to support the most efficient and strategic use of ports to grow a four pillar economy, while ensuring high standards in environmental management.
The strategy will aim to increase productivity through improvements to planning, governance, environmental management and supply chain connections.
The strategy will pave the way for future port development and planning, recognising the strategic differences and varying opportunities of Queensland ports.
The Queensland Ports Strategy is being informed by the results of public consultation on the Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy.

Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy
The Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy (
749 KB) presents the vision and principles guiding future port development and planning in the Great Barrier Reef coastal region to 2022.
The Queensland Government's aim is to ensure that port development in the region occurs in a balanced and incremental way to support economic development while maintaining the outstanding environmental value of the Great Barrier Reef.
The strategy includes the commitment to restrict any significant port development, within and adjoining the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area, to within existing port limits to 2022.
Public consultation on the Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy closed on 14 December 2012 following a six week consultation period.
The Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy - Summary of Consultation Responses Report (
210 KB) has been developed to provide information on the key themes and issues raised during the consultation process.
The results of consultation will inform the Queensland Government's strategic assessment of the Great Barrier Reef Coastal Zone and development of a Queensland Ports Strategy.

The Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy is informed by an economic analysis (
1.2 MB) undertaken by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning. The analysis forecasts ship calls in the Great Barrier Reef region under various demand scenarios up to 2022.
The Great Barrier Reef Ports Strategy complements the strategic assessment of the Great Barrier Reef Coastal Zone being undertaken by the Queensland Government.
